Watson has made statements about possible links between race and intelligence. He was quoted in an article for the Sunday Times Magazine published on October 14, 2007, that he is "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really." He stated that he hopes that everyone is equal, but "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true." He says that you should not discriminate on the basis of colour, because "there are many people of colour who are very talented, but don’t promote them when they haven’t succeeded at the lower level."[19]
"There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically," he writes. "Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so."[20]
Following the controversy that ensued, Watson resigned from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on October 25, 2007.[27]
While speaking at a conference in 2000, Watson also left an audience reeling at the University of California, Berkeley when he suggested a link between skin color and sex drive, hypothesizing that dark-skinned people have stronger libidos.[19][28] His lecture, complete with slides of bikini-clad women, argued that extracts of melanin — which give skin its color — had been found to boost subjects' sex drive. "That's why you have Latin lovers," he said, according to people who attended the lecture. "You've never heard of an English lover. Only an English patient."[29]
Watson has repeatedly supported genetic screening and genetic engineering in public lectures and interviews, arguing that stupidity is a disease and the "really stupid" bottom 10% of people should be cured.[30] He has also suggested that beauty could be genetically engineered, saying "People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty. I think it would be great."[30]

La Academia Sueca reconoce a la autora, de 87 años, por "hacer épica la experiencia femenina"
La Academia Sueca concedió hoy el Nobel de Literatura a la británica Doris Lessing, narradora comprometida con el feminismo y las causas de los débiles y considerada una de las escritoras en lengua inglesa más célebres de los últimos cien años.
Su "capacidad para transmitir la 'épica' de la experiencia femenina y narrar la división de la civilización con escepticismo, pasión y fuerza visionaria" constituyen la motivación del fallo leído por el secretario permanente de la Academia, Horace Engdahl.
Engdahl reconoció que había sido una de las decisiones "más meditadas" que esta institución ha tomado nunca.
Con la elección de Lessing, Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras en 2001, la Academia vuelve a optar por un nombre inesperado, a diferencia de lo ocurrido el año pasado, cuanto el turco Orhan Pamuk, el principal favorito, se llevó el premio.
Lessing, de 87 años y "eterna candidata" al Nobel, había dejado de aparecer hacía años en las quinielas, que este año apuntaban al italiano Claudio Magris, al sirio Adonis y al estadounidense Philip Roth.
La británica es la undécima mujer que recibe este premio, 3 años después de su predecesora inmediata, la austríaca Elfriede Jelinek, y 62 de la primera en ganarlo, la poetisa chilena Gabriela Mistral.
Lessing pertenece al movimiento de periodistas, novelistas y dramaturgos británicos que en los años 50 dieron lugar a una de las generaciones literarias más fecundas e influyentes en ese país.
De formación autodidacta, es autora de más de cuarenta obras, buena parte de ellas con un fuerte contenido biográfico, arraigadas en sus recuerdos infantiles de África y en sus desengaños políticos.
Pero ninguna es tan decisiva como "El cuaderno dorado" (1962) , la que le dio la fama -premio Médicis de Francia a la mejor novela extranjera- y que se convirtió en referencial en la lucha por la liberación de la mujer.
Los conflictos entre culturas, la desigualdad racial y la contradicción entre conciencia individual y bienestar colectivo son algunos de los temas tratados en su producción literaria, que tuvo en 1950 su debut como novelista con "Canta la hierba" , texto sobre la vida en África que refleja ya su oposición a la política racial.
La primera obra comprometida con el feminismo llegó dos años después, "Martha Quest" , que abre la serie "Los hijos de la violencia" , formada por cinco títulos.
"Un hombre y dos mujeres" (1963) , "Instrucciones para un descenso al infierno" (1974) , "El último verano de Mrs. Brown" (1974) , "La costumbre de amar" (1983) , "Cuentos africanos" (1984) , "Shikasta" (1986) , "Diario de una buena vecina" (1987) , "La buena terrorista" (1987) y "El quinto hijo" (1989) forman también parte de una lista que tiene en "The Cleft" (La hendidura, 2007) su último aporte.
Un autobiografía que sólo ha visto dos volúmenes, "Dentro de mí" (1994) y "Un paseo por la sombra" (1997) , obras teatrales y otras curiosidades como un libreto operístico y su participación en un proyecto colectivo de la editorial Fischer sobre la Biblia completan la obra de una autora metódica y amante de los gatos.
Lessing nació el 22 de octubre de 1919 en la localidad persa de Kermanshash (actual Irán) , donde su padre, que había sufrido graves amputaciones en la Primera Guerra Mundial y estaba casado con una ex enfermera, trabajaba en el Banco Imperial.
En 1924 su familia se trasladó a Rodesia del Sur (hoy Zimbabue) en busca de fortuna y se instaló en una granja, donde Doris pasó su infancia y juventud.
Se educó en un colegio católico de monjas y luego en un instituto de enseñanza secundaria también femenino en Salisbury, la capital, que abandonó a los trece años.
A los quince, huyó de casa de su madre y encadenó trabajos de niñera, telefonista, oficinista y periodista, además de empezar a publicar sus primeros relatos cortos en algunas revistas.
De vuelta a Salisbury, se casó a los diecinueve años con un funcionario rodesiano del que se separó cuatro después.
De aquella primera unión nacieron dos hijos a los que dejó, tras su divorcio, para unirse a un grupo de comunistas dirigidos por Gottfried Lessing, con quien contrajo matrimonio en 1944, tuvo un hijo y de quien también se separó en 1949.
Doris Lessing, que abandonó las ideas comunistas una década después, y este último hijo se fueron al Reino Unido en 1949 para iniciar una carrera literaria en la que lleva más de medio siglo.
El Nobel de Literatura está dotado, al igual que el resto de premios, con 10 millones de coronas suecas (1,1 millones de euros o 1,5 millones de dólares) y se entrega en una doble ceremonia el 10 de diciembre, aniversario de la muerte de su creador, Alfred Nobel, en Estocolmo y en Oslo.

An award should go to the United Airlines gate agent in Denver for being smart and funny, and making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo.
During the final days at Denver's old Stapleton airport, a crowded United flight was canceled.
A single agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS."
The agent replied, "I'm sorry sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these folks first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out."
The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "Do you have any idea who I am?"
Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone.
"May I have your attention please?" she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at the gate WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to gate 17."
With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the United agent, gritted his teeth and swore "Fuck you."
Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to stand in line for that, too."
The man retreated as the people in the terminal applauded loudly. Although the flight was canceled and people were late, they were no longer angry at United.

BURNING MAN
Aqui definitivamente hay que ir, el Burning Man. Es un festival que ocurre cada año a finales de agosto en el desierto de Nevada. Lleno de expresiones artísticas y ondas de autosustentabilidad. Vale mucho la pena.
